At its simplest, a smart thermostat controls when your boiler turns on and off, just like a traditional programme clock and room thermostat. The difference is how precisely it can do this and how easy it is for you to tweak the settings.

Most modern smart thermostats offer features such as:

• Zoning on compatible systems, letting you control upstairs and downstairs separately

• Geofencing that turns the heating down when everyone leaves the house

Homes that benefit most from smart controls

Combi vs system and regular boilers

Combi boilers provide heating and hot water directly, without a hot water cylinder. In most cases a single smart thermostat can control both heating demand and hot water timing, as long as the boiler supports it.

System and regular boilers work with hot water cylinders and sometimes separate controls for heating and hot water. Here, the thermostat may need to work alongside existing wiring centres, motorised valves and cylinder thermostats, so a professional installation is important.

OpenTherm vs simple on/off controls

Some boilers support OpenTherm or similar “modulating” control, where the thermostat can ask the boiler to run at lower power instead of just on or off. This can provide smoother room temperatures and can improve efficiency, especially in milder weather.

Other boilers use simple on/off controls only. A smart thermostat will still work in these cases, but it behaves more like a clever switch than a fully communicating controller. Your engineer can check the boiler model to see what it supports.

Existing wiring and thermostat placement

If you already have a wired wall thermostat, the existing wiring can often be re-used, provided it is in good condition and in a sensible location. Ideally the thermostat should be in a hallway or frequently used room, away from direct sunlight, draughts and radiators.

When the current thermostat is badly placed, or there is no suitable wiring, using a wireless smart thermostat with a separate receiver at the boiler is usually the better option. This lets the engineer site the thermostat where it will measure the temperature accurately, without disruptive rewiring.
