Check the display carefully, including AM/PM on 12-hour clocks. If your programmer has a small rotary dial clock, make sure the time marker lines up accurately with the current time.

Check each programme slot for mistakes

Most timers have several “on” and “off” periods for heating and hot water. A single mistyped time can cause the heating to spring into life when you are not expecting it.

Go through each time period in order and look for overlapping settings, such as an “on” time later than its matching “off” time, or duplicate periods that keep the system running all day. Correct or delete any that you do not need.

Cancel overrides, holiday mode and manual settings

Many modern programmers have a “boost”, “advance” or “override” button that temporarily ignores the schedule. If this is left active, it can appear as though the timer is faulty.

Look for modes such as “constant”, “manual”, “holiday” or “party” and return the control to “auto” or “program” mode. If there is a “reset” option for the timer only, you can use this to clear confusing overrides, then re-enter your usual times.

Replace batteries if your timer uses them

Some timers, especially older wall-mounted ones, rely on batteries to keep the clock and programme memory. Low batteries can cause random resets, clock drift and missed on/off times.

Make sure the spur switch is on and the fuse is intact. If you notice frequent trips, flickering displays or the timer resetting itself, stop there and arrange a professional inspection, as this points to an electrical or wiring issue.

Hot water works but heating does not (or vice versa)

If the boiler fires up reliably for hot water but not for heating, the timer settings can still be involved. Many programmers let you set separate schedules for central heating and domestic hot water.

Check that both channels are set to “on” at the times you expect. Make sure the heating channel is not set to “off” all day while the hot water channel is on, or vice versa. If the schedules look correct and the problem persists, it could be a valve or internal control issue that needs a Gas Safe engineer.
